We had decided to stop just inside the border of
England in the town of Carlisle. It was closing in on
5:00 PM and we usually call it a driving day by that time - as we're
usually on the road in the morning by 8:30. It's a long enough
day. Carlisle was IMMENSE. And what is this???
Everyone in Carlisle already knows John???????? They're all
honking madly at him and waving! WAIT! I'm not sure they're
waving, sweetie! They're more like saluting you - they're just
not using all their fingers! Just one! Must be our Irish
license plate - couldn't be our driving! Let's get the heck
outta' here and go to the NEXT "small" town of Penrith. After
circling Penrith about 57 times, and stopping at ONE hotel that wanted
60 sterling for their room ($120.00 American dollars) - and the room
was located RIGHT over a bar that was BOOMING on a Saturday night - we
circled yet again. Then I spotted this black kitty cat parked
outside a guest house in a row of brownstone guest houses.
First cat I had seen the whole trip - so we decided this must be the
place. It's "a place" alright - if there's a God - He will get me
OUT of England - this is NOT my place to be - I'm very very unimpressed.

This is the brownstone row of guest houses that the black cat
owns. =) He's very friendly. Our room is over an
ancient graveyard that belongs to the ancient church next door.
Dev would think this was quite cool - I just want to get the hell out
of England. LOL Thankfully this was not a destination - it
was just a route we needed to take to get to Wales. Don't expect
much out of us here - in the morning we're goners - and we'll check in
from Wales. We're having a little difficulty finding internet
cafe access right now that don't have firewalls to keep us from
sending the necessary files we need to maintain this web site - but we
WILL find one. We'll catch a few pictures for you through England
and then meet us in Wales - you know the place - the little corner
pub. See you there!

This was the graveyard we slept over last night. I
had to wait until morning to photograph it. We will be in Wales
tonight. I will NEVER return to England. Our experience
here has not been a favorable one - the lady we rented from last
night may as well have hung a sign in the foyer that said: I Hate
Americans. Only because I was biting my tongue was there no
confrontation on my part. However, when she referred to us as
"You People" - John hurried me on out of there. I thought
about the experience all day long. I've always considered racism
to be a black/white - or Mexican/White issue. I guess I've always
experienced racisim as being people of different skin colors hating
each other for no reason. As far as I know the British are white
- like me. Never in my life would I have considered
cross-continental racism. Well, it's ugly even with a proper
British accent. So we will leave this wretched country behind us
and scurry into Wales. If we find the same "welcome" - we'll
ferry back to Ireland where we know there are warm, gracious
people.
